More often than not these days, in my attempts to fend off the tide of insalubrious news coming from my TV, radio and phone, I go walking beside my local river, hoping to embroil myself in the natural elements of water, birdsong and sunlight.
A few days ago, I went to a less familiar stretch and I stumbled upon a heavy-set railway bridge running over the waterway. Nothing about the bridge struck me as attractive as I ducked beneath its iron girders; it was low, muscular and moderately oppressive.
What struck me was its similarity to a bridge that Claude Monet painted several times during the 1870s. Monetβs bridge crossed the River Seine on the outskirts of Paris, and also carried a railway track for trains going to and from the city.
